MTN Nigeria, Huawei Launch World’s First RuralCow Base Stations to Connect Remote Villages

MTN Nigeria and Huawei have completed the world’s first commercial deployment of RuralCow, a rapid-deployment, ultra-simple mobile base station designed to bring reliable connectivity to Nigeria’s most remote villages.

For decades, millions of rural Nigerians, farmers, traders, and students, struggled with poor or non-existent mobile coverage. Traditional base stations were costly, difficult to install, and uneconomical in sparsely populated areas. RuralCow changes that.

A Game-Changer for Rural Connectivity
The compact, all-in-one RuralCow unit integrates baseband, radio, and transmission, reducing equipment size by 70 per cent and power consumption by 85 per cent. It requires no fibre or microwave links yet can transmit signals up to 30 km, even across challenging terrain.

Early deployments show that communities with 1,000-3,000 residents can now achieve a return on investment in just three years, down from the 5-10 years previously expected with conventional towers.

Bridging the Digital Divide
Yahaya Ibrahim, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Technical Officer, said, “Everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life. RuralCow allows us to rapidly extend coverage and ensure equal access to digital opportunities.”

Huawei’s Fang Xiang added, “RuralCow is a green, cost-effective solution that brings connectivity to areas once considered unreachable. Our mission is to connect the unconnected and drive digital inclusion.”

Lighting Up the Last Mile
With RuralCow now live, rural Nigerians can access mobile services critical for education, healthcare, and commerce. For many villagers, the sight of a RuralCow mast is more than technology; it’s a gateway to opportunities long out of reach.

Nigeria’s digital future is being rewritten, starting with the villages that were once left behind.
