MTN Nigeria will temporarily disrupt services across parts of Adamawa, Borno, and Kano States this Saturday for a scheduled two-hour network maintenance exercise.
The maintenance is set for Saturday, October 25, 2025, between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., and will affect 101 network sites across 15 Local Government Areas. All 2G, 3G, 4G, and enterprise connections in the affected areas will be unavailable during this window.
Why the Maintenance is Necessary
MTN states the work is a crucial part of a long-term effort to improve service reliability and strengthen its fiber infrastructure in Northern Nigeria. The planned activity involves replacing damaged cable sections and reducing multiple joints along the AFCOT–Bawo Village fiber route, which have previously caused instability and poor network performance.
The intervention is a comprehensive upgrade following a similar restoration exercise conducted in August 2025.
Affected Areas
The service disruption will affect the following Local Government Areas:
- Kano State: Nasarawa LGA
- Adamawa State: Girei, Song, Mubi North, Hong, Gombi, Fufore, Mubi South, Madagali, Michika, Maiha, Chibok, and Yola North
- Borno State: Askira/Uba and Shani
MTN acknowledged the temporary inconvenience and expressed regret to its customers.
The Wider Problem of Fiber Cuts
This maintenance highlights the industry-wide challenge of infrastructure damage. Telecom operators, including MTN and 9mobile, continue to suffer service disruptions due to frequent fiber cuts. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently expressed grave concern, reporting that major telecom operators record an average of 1,100 fiber cuts every week nationwide.
To combat this crisis, the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, has officially designated telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), placing a national security responsibility on all citizens to protect the assets.
