Millions of telecommunication subscribers across Nigeria are experiencing significant disruptions in SIM-related services, including new SIM registration, SIM swaps, and replacements. This widespread issue stems from a mandatory migration by mobile network operators (MNOs) to a new identity verification platform directed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) confirmed on Tuesday that this transition, while aimed at improving the integrity and efficiency of identity management in Nigeria, has led to unforeseen technical challenges impacting service availability nationwide.
“During this period, MNOs will not be able to support SIM Swap, SIM replacement, activation of new subscribers and other SIM-related services,” ALTON stated.
The new platform directly affects the real-time identity verification process crucial for these services. Telecom operators are actively collaborating with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other relevant authorities to resolve the integration issues as quickly as possible.
ALTON has apologized for the inconvenience and advised subscribers to postpone visits to service centers for SIM-related transactions until further notice. The association pledges to provide timely updates as the situation develops, reiterating its commitment to delivering secure and reliable telecommunications services.
