The Lagos State Government is set to launch a new digital addressing system on July 1, 2025. This initiative aims to simplify business operations, enhance access to essential services, and increase the state’s revenue.
Dr. Babatunde Olajide, Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, explained that this “Lagos identifier program” will benefit various sectors, including housing, transportation, e-cab hailing services, security, emergency response, taxation, and urban planning. He highlighted that the technology will not only establish Lagos as a “smart state” but also have a tangible impact on residents’ lives and improve the government’s capacity to respond to their needs.
The project will kick off in Ikeja Local Council, which encompasses 23,000 properties. The production and installation of the digital house numbers will be handled by state agencies in collaboration with a technical partner. Dr. Olajide emphasized the timely nature of the project, stating that its success in Lagos could serve as a model for other Nigerian states.
Following the completion of the pilot in Ikeja, the system will be gradually rolled out to other local councils across the state. Property owners with subdivided properties are advised to come forward for re-identification.
Yinka Adesiyan, a technical partner on the project, further explained that every street and house will feature names and numbers embedded in scannable barcodes, providing residents with access to various relevant information.
