AfDB Raises $2.5 Billion Bond as Investor Orders Near Double to $4.8 Billion

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has raised $2.5 billion through a three-year global benchmark bond after investor orders reached $4.8 billion, reflecting strong demand for the multilateral lender’s debt offering.

The bond, priced on October 21, 2026, carries a fixed coupon of 4.875 per cent and matures on January 18, 2030, according to a statement published by the bank.

The final order book was almost twice the amount the bank sought to raise, giving it room to price the transaction at a tighter spread than initially indicated.

AfDB initially guided investors towards a spread of approximately 30 basis points above the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) mid-swaps. It subsequently priced the bond at 28 basis points above the benchmark, reflecting the strong demand recorded during the book-building process.

The transaction was priced at a re-offer yield of 4.933 per cent and a price of 99.837 per cent. Interest on the bond will be paid semi-annually, while settlement is scheduled for November 2, 2026.

The bank announced the transaction on October 20, with indications of interest exceeding $3.7 billion by 8:10 a.m. UK time the following day, as the order book formally opened.

The final order book reached $4.8 billion, including $50 million in joint lead managers’ interest.

The bond was priced at a spread of 8.7 basis points above the benchmark US Treasury security maturing on October 15, 2029.

The latest issuance marks AfDB’s third US dollar benchmark bond of the year, following a $1 billion 10-year bond in January and a $2 billion five-year bond in February.

The bank has also tapped the sterling debt market as part of its broader international funding programme. In January, it issued a £1 billion three-year global benchmark bond due in January 2029.

These transactions form part of the bank’s efforts to access international capital markets to finance its operations and development priorities across Africa.

Strong demand for the latest dollar bond allowed AfDB to tighten its pricing by two basis points from its initial guidance. While the order book demonstrates investor appetite for the offering, the final borrowing cost also reflects prevailing interest rates and conditions in global debt markets.

As a multilateral development finance institution, AfDB raises funds from international capital markets to support development financing across its regional member countries.

Separately, Nigeria and AfDB have agreed to review the country’s $6.2 billion project portfolio to identify implementation challenges, accelerate project delivery and align ongoing operations with the Federal Government’s priorities.

The review is intended to address bottlenecks affecting project execution and improve the delivery of development initiatives supported by the bank.

The engagement highlights the importance of translating development financing into completed infrastructure and other projects that deliver measurable economic and social benefits.

In June 2025, Fitch Ratings affirmed AfDB’s Long-Term Issuer Default Rating at ‘AAA’ with a Stable Outlook, supporting its standing in international capital markets.

The latest bond issuance reinforces the bank’s continued access to global investors as it mobilises funding for development across Africa. Its broader impact will depend on how effectively the resources raised are deployed to support economic growth, infrastructure development and improved living standards across the continent.
