I recently attended the 2025 Consumers Value Awards (CVA) in Lagos, an event that has steadily become the benchmark for brand credibility in Nigeria. This year’s edition was especially competitive, with over 15,000 consumer votes deciding the winners across 60 categories. From financial services to food staples, the CVA spotlighted brands Nigerians have come to trust, brands that deliver real value, day after day.
In the consumer staples category, one name stood out unmistakably: Checkers Custard. The brand clinched the award for Top Custard & Pap (Ogi/Akamu) Alternative, affirming its rising influence in Nigerian kitchens and its success in blending tradition with innovation. But beyond the award and applause, a personal experience brought the recognition into even clearer perspective.
Placed on every table at the awards venue was a pack of the now-celebrated Checkers Custard Pap Three-in-One, an instant blend that combines custard, milk, and sugar. At the end of the evening, I took one home, partly out of curiosity and partly out of admiration for its big win. That weekend, we decided to make it a family breakfast, pairing it with hot moi moi.
The result was, in a word, impressive.
The product is thoughtfully put together. From opening the pack to whisking it into a smooth paste, everything felt intuitive. The texture was consistent. The mixing was silky. And when the hot water went in, the custard thickened beautifully, no lumps, no hassles, no trial-and-error. The milk and sugar level hit the sweet spot too: rich, balanced, and satisfying without being overwhelming. Remarkably, no additional ingredients were needed. It truly lived up to its promise of being a one-step, one-pack meal solution.
For families, students, professionals, and anyone who loves a fast, nourishing breakfast, this custard mix ticks all the important boxes:
- Easy to make
- Time-saving
- Nutritious and filling
- Pocket-friendly
And most importantly, it carries the comforting warmth of a homemade meal.
In a country where the morning rush can make breakfast feel like a luxury, Checkers Custard Pap flavour offers a solution that blends convenience with quality. Its affordability makes it accessible, while its taste makes it easy to love. It has all the makings of a true staple, something that should be in every Nigerian home, whether for children heading to school, adults rushing to work, or weekend family moments like mine.
As impressive as the product is, I noticed two important areas the company could improve.
- Distribution Gaps: Despite its growing popularity, the Checkers Three-in-One is still not available everywhere. In my area around Isheri–Ijegun, for instance, it has been difficult to find. For a product with such strong consumer appeal, scaling distribution should be a priority.
- Awareness: Many consumers still don’t know that a three-in-one pap flavour exists at all. A stronger communication drive, community sampling, social media engagement, retail activations, and partnerships could significantly boost market penetration.
With these improvements, Checkers Custard could fully maximise the momentum its CVA win has given.
After trying the award-winning Checkers Custard Pap flavour firsthand, it is easy to understand why consumers voted it the best in its category. It is convenient, delicious, affordable, and thoughtfully designed for the Nigerian lifestyle. While there is room for wider reach and stronger visibility, the product itself is undeniably superb.
In a marketplace full of options, Checkers Custard Pap flavour stands out. This is not just because it won an award, but more because it genuinely delivers value where it matters most: right on the breakfast table.
