Nigeria has lost one of its finest wordsmiths. Dan Agbese, co-founder of Newswatch magazine, veteran editor, respected columnist, scholar, mentor, and one of the towering figures of modern Nigerian journalism, has passed on. He died on Monday morning in Lagos at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations.
For more than five decades, Agbese embodied the very best of the journalistic craft. He was not merely a reporter; he was a custodian of truth, a defender of integrity, and a craftsman of language whose disciplined prose shaped national conversation. From his early days as editor of The Nigeria Standard and New Nigerian to his leadership as general manager of Radio Benue, Agbese demonstrated a rare combination of intellectual depth, editorial courage, and unwavering professionalism.
His most iconic imprint came with Newswatch, the trailblazing weekly magazine he co-founded, which revolutionised investigative journalism in Nigeria. As Editor-in-Chief until 2010, he set new standards for depth, rigour, and fearless reporting. Under his stewardship, Newswatch became the gold standard of political analysis and public affairs reporting, influencing how stories were told and how power was held to account.
Dan Agbese was not just a practitioner; he was a scholar of his craft. With degrees from the University of Lagos and Columbia University in New York, he combined academic insight with newsroom experience. His books, Nigeria Their Nigeria, Fellow Nigerians, The Reporter’s Companion, Style: A Guide to Good Writing, and The Columnist’s Companion, became essential reading for journalists seeking clarity, precision, and purpose in their writing.
What set Agbese apart was not only his mastery of words but also his moral authority. His commentaries, laced with wit, wisdom, and unflinching critique, helped set the tone for public discourse for decades. He mentored many, inspired even more, and carved a path that generations of Nigerian journalists continue to follow.
Dan Agbese lived a life of purpose, service, and excellence. He elevated journalism. He dignified commentary. He stood for truth even when it was inconvenient. And he leaves behind an indelible footprint on Nigeria’s media landscape.
We honour him. We celebrate him. We thank him.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
