The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s first nationwide learning assessment will hold from June 29 to July 3, 2026, as part of efforts to measure learning outcomes across basic and secondary education.
The exercise has been declared National Learning Assessment Week, according to the Federal Ministry of Education.
A statement issued by Boriowo Folasade, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, confirmed that the assessment will be conducted across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The ministry explained that the assessment is designed to generate reliable data on students’ learning achievements to guide education planning, policy reforms, resource allocation, and improved teaching outcomes.
It stressed that the exercise is strictly diagnostic and will not affect students’ promotion, placement, or certification.
“The exercise is strictly diagnostic and will not be used for promotion, placement, or certification purposes,” the ministry said.
Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, described the initiative as a key step toward improving accountability and strengthening evidence-based decision-making in the education sector.
The nationwide exercise will be conducted in selected sampled schools across the country.
It will target learners in:
- Primary 3
- Primary 5
- Junior Secondary School 2 (JSS2)
- Senior Secondary School 2 (SS2)
Subjects to be assessed include:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Basic Science and Technology
- Citizenship and Heritage Studies
According to the ministry, preparations for the assessment began in 2025 in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), with technical support from UNICEF and the World Bank.
Assessment tools have already been developed, pilot-tested, and field personnel trained ahead of the rollout.
