The Federal Government has commissioned the Renewed Hope-NITDA Innovation Hub, a new artificial intelligence and robotics centre at Obafemi Awolowo University.
The facility was unveiled on June 8 by Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, during a ceremony at the university in Ile-Ife.
Developed by the National Information Technology Development Agency in partnership with the Renewed Hope Initiative, the hub houses specialised laboratories for artificial intelligence, robotics, additive manufacturing (3D printing), and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Inside the Hub
- AI laboratory
Supports machine learning, data analysis, and intelligent systems development.
- Robotics laboratory
Provides equipment for building and testing robotic systems.
- Additive manufacturing laboratory
Offers 3D printing and rapid prototyping capabilities for engineering and product development.
- IoT laboratory
Enables work on connected devices, sensors, and smart systems.
The government said the centre is intended to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the practical demands of the global technology industry by giving students and researchers access to advanced equipment that has traditionally been scarce in many Nigerian institutions.
Tijani described the hub as a direct investment in the potential of Nigerian youth rather than simply a collection of laboratories and equipment. He urged students to use the facility to build practical solutions, launch innovative products, and contribute to the growth of a self-sustaining digital economy.
Beyond software development, the hub’s focus on robotics, IoT, and additive manufacturing exposes students to hardware innovation and industrial applications in sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, construction, and aerospace. Access to prototyping tools and technical infrastructure could help reduce one of the major barriers faced by Nigerian startups and researchers working on physical products.
The project also aligns with the Federal Government’s broader digital infrastructure agenda. Earlier this year, Tijani said ongoing investments in fibre-optic networks, communications satellites, and additional rural telecom towers are aimed at expanding digital access across the country by 2027.
