The debut book by Nigerian entrepreneur Tara Fela-Durotoye, Building Beyond You: The House of Tara Story, has recorded a major international milestone after charting as an Amazon Business bestseller in both Canada and the United States.
The book, which draws from Fela-Durotoye’s 27-year entrepreneurial journey building House of Tara International, first entered Amazon’s Business bestseller rankings in Canada ahead of its official unveiling in Lagos in April 2026.
Days after the launch event, the title also climbed Amazon’s Business charts in the United States, marking a rare double achievement for a Nigerian-authored business book.
The feat has attracted attention within Nigeria’s entrepreneurship and publishing ecosystem, particularly because the book achieved international commercial traction without the backing of a major global publishing house.
Industry observers say the success underscores growing global interest in African business leadership stories and practical frameworks for building sustainable enterprises.
Unlike many motivational business books, Building Beyond You focuses on systems, succession planning, scalability, and institution-building, issues increasingly relevant to entrepreneurs worldwide.
Speaking on the philosophy behind the book, Tara Fela-Durotoye said:
“Most entrepreneurs build businesses that are entirely dependent on them. What I have learned, and what this book is about, is that the real work is building something that continues, grows, and creates value long after you step away.”
The book was officially unveiled during a private event at The IALA Hub in April 2026.
The gathering attracted business executives, entrepreneurs, corporate partners, and members of Nigeria’s startup ecosystem.
However, before the Lagos launch concluded, the book had already entered Amazon’s Business bestseller rankings in Canada, despite limited promotional activity targeted at the North American market at the time.
The U.S. ranking followed shortly after, reinforcing the book’s early international appeal.
The book features a foreword by Ibukun Awosika, former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria, and an afterword by Vusi Thembekwayo.
The endorsements from two of Africa’s most prominent business leaders are believed to have contributed to the momentum surrounding the release.
At the core of the book is the story of how Tara Fela-Durotoye transformed House of Tara from a small business launched in her university living room in 1998 into one of Nigeria’s most recognised beauty brands.
Over the years, the company has expanded into a pan-African franchise network and trained more than 10,000 beauty entrepreneurs and makeup artists across the continent.
The book addresses a challenge many founders face: how to build businesses that can survive beyond the founder’s direct involvement.
That message gained even greater significance after Fela-Durotoye appointed Rosemary Layode as the company’s first-ever Managing Director in April 2025, stepping back from day-to-day operations.
Analysts say the leadership transition effectively demonstrated the succession principles discussed in the book.
Following the book’s commercial success, Tara Fela-Durotoye has announced the BBY Campus Tour, a nationwide initiative aimed at equipping student entrepreneurs across Nigerian universities with practical business knowledge.
The initiative is designed to support “campuspreneurs” building early-stage businesses with limited access to mentorship and business systems.
According to organisers, the programme will operate through a community funding model where book purchases and corporate sponsorships subsidise free copies for students unable to afford them.
