Lagos State University (LASU) has retained its position as Nigeria’s most sought-after tertiary institution, attracting 84,326 first-choice applications in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) admission cycle.

The figures were announced on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the ongoing JAMB Policy Meeting on Admissions in Abuja. Data released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board showed LASU leading the national ranking for the second consecutive year.

The University of Lagos followed with 78,240 applications, while Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, came third with 60,370 applications.

The latest ranking further strengthens LASU’s reputation as Nigeria’s “University of First Choice,” reflecting growing confidence from students and parents in its academic standards, stable academic calendar, innovation-driven leadership, and student-focused policies.

Over the years, the institution has steadily improved its profile through investments in teaching, research, infrastructure, and digital innovation, positioning itself for stronger global competitiveness.

LASU’s rise in admission popularity has been notable. Before 2023, the university was outside the top 10 most sought-after institutions. It climbed to third place in 2023 with over 55,000 applicants, moved to second in 2024 with 62,601 applications, and reached the top spot in 2025 with over 70,000 applications.

With the 2026 figure rising further to 84,326, LASU has now firmly consolidated its status as one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising universities.

Reacting to the development, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its continued support, which she said has been instrumental to the university’s progress.

She also commended staff, students, and stakeholders for their collective efforts in strengthening LASU’s reputation locally and internationally.

According to her, the achievement validates the university’s vision of becoming a globally competitive institution anchored on excellence, innovation, integrity, and impactful scholarship.

She added that LASU remains committed to sustaining high standards in teaching, research, community service, and human capital development.

Olatunji-Bello further assured prospective students of a conducive learning environment, industry-relevant programmes, and transformative academic experiences designed to prepare graduates for leadership in a rapidly changing world.
