The Lagos State Government has directed all communities operating gated streets to keep their gates open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. throughout the festive season to ease traffic congestion across the state.
The directive was announced in a statement on Tuesday by Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation, who also ordered the removal of unauthorised gates and structures on public roads within seven days.
Osiyemi said the move aligns with the state’s THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritises free traffic flow, public safety, and ease of doing business, especially during the Christmas period marked by increased travel, commerce, tourism, and entertainment.
While acknowledging the security benefits of gated streets, the ministry stressed that unrestricted access is critical on alternative routes now experiencing heavier traffic. Enforcement teams will ensure compliance to prevent gridlock and protect lives and property.
The government reiterated its long-standing position against indiscriminate street gating, warning that illegal closures hinder emergency access, worsen congestion, and can aid criminal activity. It urged communities to comply to ensure a smooth, safe festive season for residents and visitors alike.
