GIG (God Is Good) Motors is urging the Federal Government to reintroduce its 50 per cent reduction in interstate transport fares ahead of the 2026 festive season, when passenger traffic is expected to rise, and the 2027 general elections.
The company said it was already engaging officials of the Ministry of Transportation on the possible return of the scheme, which was last implemented between December 2023 and January 4, 2024.
Dr Enahoro Okhae, Chief Executive Officer of GIG Mobility, disclosed this on Wednesday at the launch of the company’s new products, HireX and PASS, in Abuja.
He described the previous intervention as an important measure that helped make travel more affordable and encouraged more Nigerians to move across the country.
“When the Federal Government did that (fare reduction), it was a very, very laudable, very important scheme. We did it, it was great, we enjoyed it because it made more people travel, they (customers) enjoyed it because it gave them 50 per cent discount,” Okhae said.
He confirmed that the scheme was implemented in 2023 and 2024 but was not repeated in 2025.
Okhae said the company hoped the government would approve the intervention again this year, particularly given the expected increase in travel during the festive period and ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We’re already having those talks (on fare reduction). We’re hoping that it will happen again this year because a lot of people are also going to travel. You know the general election is in January 2027, so there’s going to be a lot of movement in the course of December. We’re really hoping that it happens because it helps a lot of people to travel,” he said.
He explained that the proposed discount could significantly reduce the financial burden on passengers at a time when increased demand typically puts upward pressure on transport fares.
For instance, a journey that would ordinarily cost ₦60,000 could cost ₦30,000 under a 50 per cent reduction.
According to him, the savings would leave travellers with more money to spend during the festive season while making it easier for families to visit loved ones in different parts of the country.
The company’s position comes as Nigerians face continuing pressure on household budgets, with the cost of interstate travel often rising during peak periods.
Speaking at the product launch, Joseph Osanipin, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), commended technology-driven platforms seeking to simplify the travel experience by bringing different mobility services together.
He said digital solutions should address practical challenges beyond transportation, including accommodation, airport transfers and navigation in unfamiliar destinations.
However, Osanipin identified trust, reliability and efficient service delivery as essential to the adoption of digital mobility platforms.
He stressed that customers must be confident that their personal information and transactions are secure and that services advertised through digital platforms will be delivered as promised.
