The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, introducing unique digital postcodes for addressable buildings across Nigeria.

The initiative, unveiled on Thursday by Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, is designed to improve how locations are identified and make it easier for individuals, businesses and government agencies to connect with services and opportunities.

The system is operated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and is expected to support areas including e-commerce, logistics, emergency response and public service delivery by providing a standard digital reference for locations.

Speaking at the launch, Tijani described the digital postcode system as an important step towards building a more connected Nigerian economy. “Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.

According to the minister, a reliable postcode system could help businesses expand their delivery reach, enable families to provide precise locations during emergencies and help government agencies deliver essential services more effectively.

“Think of the small business ready to deliver beyond its neighbourhood, the family waiting for emergency help and the community that government needs to reach with essential services,” he said.

“An accurate postcode can make a meaningful difference in each of these lives.”

Tijani also linked the addressing infrastructure to the Federal Government’s broader ambition of building a $1 trillion economy, arguing that reliable location data is part of the digital infrastructure required to support economic activity.

He urged Nigerians to identify their postcodes through the official digital postcode platform at postcode.gov.ng and begin using them when sharing their locations with individuals, businesses and service providers.

The new system assigns an 11-character digital postcode to each addressable building in Nigeria.

It uses a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled framework to identify locations across five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building.

The approach is intended to provide a more detailed and standardised way of identifying locations than the country’s existing postcode framework.

NIPOST has said the system is expected to improve services such as parcel delivery, emergency response, public administration and e-commerce by providing a consistent reference for physical locations.

Tijani also encouraged Nigerians to test the platform and provide feedback on their experience, including how easily they can locate their codes and what additional services they expect the system to support.

The launch represents a significant development in Nigeria’s efforts to modernise its national addressing infrastructure.

Nigeria has historically relied on a six-digit postcode system, but gaps and inconsistencies in addressing have created challenges for logistics, service delivery and emergency response.

The Federal Executive Council approved the implementation of the GIS-enabled alphanumeric postcode system in March 2026 as part of efforts to modernise the country’s addressing infrastructure.

The initiative has also involved efforts by NIPOST and the National Addressing Council to establish a more coordinated framework for identifying and referencing locations nationwide.

The Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi, had previously highlighted incomplete and inconsistent addressing as a challenge affecting service delivery and emergency response.

The success of the new system, however, will ultimately depend not only on assigning digital codes but also on public adoption, accuracy of location data, integration with logistics and government systems, and widespread acceptance by businesses and service providers.

For consumers and businesses, the practical test will be whether the new postcode system can translate into faster deliveries, easier location verification, more efficient emergency response and better access to services.

If widely adopted and properly integrated, the digital postcode could become an important layer of Nigeria’s emerging digital infrastructure.
