The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the ministry.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary, urging citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s journey since independence and renew their commitment to national unity and development.
The minister described Nigeria’s diversity, human capital and natural resources as significant strengths, while calling on citizens to promote peace, patriotism and peaceful coexistence.
“Peace and stability are necessary conditions for the development of any nation,” Tunji-Ojo said, urging Nigerians to emulate the patriotism of the country’s founding fathers and contribute to building a nation future generations can be proud of.
He said Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as a strength and called for collective efforts to build a stronger and more prosperous country.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to improving national security and public safety and creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations.
He urged Nigerians to mark the anniversary by demonstrating unity, patriotism, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
The October 1 holiday will give workers and citizens across the country a day off to commemorate Nigeria’s independence from British colonial rule in 1960.
Tunji-Ojo wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary and paid tribute to the country’s past heroes for their contributions to the nation’s independence.
