LG Electronics has reaffirmed its commitment to giving consumers greater control over privacy, data use and security as smart home technology becomes increasingly common in Nigerian households.
The company said its Smart TV ecosystem is designed to combine convenience and personalised entertainment with transparency, customer choice and privacy protection.
Modern Smart TVs now offer features including voice-enabled searches, personalised content recommendations, device connectivity and smart home integration. According to LG, these features are designed to remain under the control of users.
LG said features such as voice recognition, Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), personalised recommendations and interest-based advertising are optional and require users to opt in before activation.
Users can review permissions, change settings or withdraw consent through their TV settings. The company said doing so does not affect basic functions such as watching live television, streaming content, connecting external devices or receiving software updates.
“Technology should work for people, not the other way around,” LG said, stressing its focus on providing consumers with meaningful choices while improving the entertainment experience.
LG also provided clarification on how voice recognition works on its Smart TVs, amid growing consumer interest in voice-enabled devices.
The company said voice control is disabled by default and only becomes active when a user enables the feature. On compatible models, users can initiate voice commands by pressing the microphone button on the remote or activating hands-free voice control.
LG said its Smart TVs do not continuously record conversations or store ambient household discussions.
When hands-free voice control is enabled, the television listens locally for a designated wake word. According to the company, audio that does not contain the wake word is processed on the device and immediately discarded rather than stored or transmitted.
Once a voice command is completed, the voice recognition session ends automatically.
LG said its Automatic Content Recognition feature is designed to identify content being viewed from supported sources and help improve content discovery and related viewing experiences.
The company said ACR is switched off by default and requires users to accept separate agreements before it is activated.
LG also clarified that ACR does not collect screenshots, screen recordings, video captures or voice recordings. Instead, it uses audio fingerprinting technology to identify content without storing the audio or visual material displayed on a user’s television.
Personalised advertising services, the company added, require separate user approval.
As Nigerian households increasingly use gaming consoles, streaming devices, decoders and other connected products, LG said its Smart TVs are designed to simplify connectivity between compatible devices.
Device discovery technology allows compatible Smart TVs to recognise and communicate with devices such as set-top boxes, gaming consoles, DVD players and Internet of Things (IoT) products.
LG said information used to facilitate device connectivity is not used for household profiling or targeted advertising without additional user consent.
