Veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
Jacobs’ death was announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his family, bringing to an end a remarkable acting career that spanned more than five decades across theatre, television and film.
His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced the death in a statement describing the veteran actor as “The Lion of Lufodo.”
The family said Jacobs died after a life dedicated to his family and the creative arts, while appealing to the public, bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy during its period of mourning.
Born on July 11, 1942, in Kano, Jacobs developed an interest in acting at an early age. His passion for theatre was strengthened after watching a performance by legendary Nigerian theatre practitioner Hubert Ogunde.
He later travelled to the United Kingdom, where he trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
Before returning to Nigeria, Jacobs built an international career, appearing in British television productions and films. His credits included The Goodies, The Professionals, Barlow at Large, The Dogs of War and Pirates.
On his return to Nigeria, he became one of the defining figures of the country’s emerging film industry and was widely recognised for his commanding screen presence, distinctive voice and portrayal of kings, patriarchs, businessmen and other authoritative characters.
Jacobs appeared in more than 100 films during his career and became one of the most respected figures in Nollywood.
His contribution extended beyond acting. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was involved in the Lufodo Group and Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, supporting film production and the training of young performers.
His career earned him several honours, including the 2007 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the 2011 national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2016.
Jacobs is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.
