The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has launched the maiden edition of the ARCON Special Recognition Awards (ASRA) to reward excellence, ethical compliance and outstanding performance across Nigeria’s multi-billion-naira advertising industry.
The initiative was unveiled at a high-level media briefing in Lagos attended by marketing leaders, sectoral presidents and corporate executives. It marks a deliberate shift in the regulator’s approach—from primarily enforcement to actively promoting industry growth and professional standards.
Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, ARCON’s Director-General, said the council aims to “rewrite the history” of Nigeria’s marketing communications sector. “We need to change the narrative as a regulator. We are not regulating to strangulate. We are regulating to develop and grow the industry,” he stated.
Fadolapo described the awards as a prestigious “bragging right” that will confer stature and recognition on recipients. He noted that ASRA will also help document the profession’s evolution since 1928, from its early days to today’s specialised, sophisticated industry.
Acknowledging ARCON’s historical emphasis on sanctions, he explained that the awards were designed to motivate ethical practice and professional excellence rather than simply punish non-compliance.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Friday, 23 October 2026, at the Bamoral Convention Centre in Ikeja, Lagos. They are organised around four pillars: Advertising Compliance, Public Sector Recognition, Private Sector Recognition and Individual Recognition.
To ensure transparency and avoid any perception of bias, the planning committee has engaged independent auditors SIAO Partners.
Yinka Adebayo, Chairman of the ASRA Planning Committee, outlined the framework. The Advertising Compliance category will cover 16 subsectors, including fintech, banking, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and telecommunications. Winners will be selected through a data-driven process based on the volume of advertising materials submitted to ARCON in 2024 and 2025. Independent auditors will calculate a weighted compliance score that rewards both volume and adherence to standards. Both client brands and their creative agencies will be recognised jointly.
Lanre Adisa, Chairman of the Heads of Advertising Sectoral Groups, welcomed the collaborative approach. “We can’t overemphasise the need for recognition in an industry like ours,” he said. “One of the things that we always strive for is to create visibility for the industry. One good way of doing that is to recognise what we are doing for ourselves and celebrate that; then the world can see what we are doing.”
