Global ride-hailing giant Uber has officially announced its exit from Nigeria, winding down all local operations effective September 2, 2026.
The company confirmed the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to its users while acknowledging the impact of its departure.
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said. “Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers.”
Uber acknowledged that the shutdown would disrupt routines and offered an apology for the inconvenience. To manage the transition, the platform’s Help Centre will remain accessible until September 23 to assist users with final account inquiries and resolve outstanding issues.
The exit marks the end of a turbulent 12-year tenure in the country. Uber’s Nigerian operations faced persistent strain, highlighted by repeated driver strikes in 2017, 2023, and 2025 over platform commission rates, low fares, and working conditions.
Nigeria now joins a growing list of international markets the tech firm has pulled out of, bringing Uber’s global exit total to 15 countries across Asia and Africa since its founding in 2009.
