Sunbeth Energies Limited has unveiled what it describes as Nigeria’s first self-service fuel station at its Ogba outlet in Lagos, introducing a digital fueling system that allows motorists to initiate, monitor and complete fuel purchases independently.

The company said the innovation is designed to improve transparency, convenience and accountability in fuel retailing by giving customers direct visibility over the dispensing process.

Under the new system, customers can initiate a transaction, monitor the volume of fuel dispensed in real time and confirm payment through an interactive digital interface.

The development marks a shift from Nigeria’s traditional attendant-operated fueling model, where customers typically rely on station personnel to dispense fuel and process transactions.

Sunbeth said the new platform is intended to address longstanding concerns around dispensing accuracy and transaction transparency while giving consumers greater control over their purchases.

The solution was developed in partnership with Tech Brokers Limited, a Nigerian technology company specialising in digital transformation and enterprise technology solutions.

According to the companies, the platform combines forecourt automation with secure payment integration and is designed to support multiple payment channels and forecourt technologies.

Speaking at the launch, Lateef Abioye, Sunbeth Energies Managing Director, described the development as a major milestone for the company and Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry.

“Today is a defining moment not only for Sunbeth Energies but also for Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry,” Abioye said.

He said the technology would establish a new standard for transparency and customer empowerment by allowing motorists to know exactly how much fuel they are purchasing and paying for.

“What makes this achievement even more significant is that it is a Nigerian innovation,” he added, noting that Sunbeth worked with Tech Brokers to develop and deploy the technology locally.

According to Abioye, the Ogba station is the first phase of a broader digital transformation programme that will eventually extend across Sunbeth Energies’ retail network.

“This is only the first step. We are committed to building intelligent, connected forecourts that combine digital payments, automation, data-driven insights, and superior customer experience,” he said.

Wasiu Popoola, Chief Executive Officer of Tech Brokers Limited, described the project as an important development in the digital transformation of Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas industry.

Popoola said the platform was designed as an indigenous technology solution capable of supporting different payment channels and forecourt technologies.

“Today marks the beginning of a new dawn for fuel retailing in Nigeria. This is more than a self-service solution; it is a robust indigenous technology platform developed to support the future of the downstream sector,” he said.

He added that the architecture could accommodate future innovations as the industry evolves.

Popoola commended Sunbeth Energies for embracing technology and partnering with a Nigerian company to develop a solution targeted at local industry challenges.

The new system gives motorists greater control over the fueling process, allowing them to monitor the litres dispensed and complete payment through the digital interface.

One of the first customers to use the system described the experience as simple and reassuring, particularly because of the ability to monitor the dispensing process personally.

To support customers during the transition, Sunbeth has deployed trained customer experience personnel at the Ogba station to guide motorists through the self-service process and provide assistance where required.

The company said the Ogba deployment represents the beginning of a wider strategy to integrate digital payments, automation, data and customer-focused technology into its retail operations.

The development could also signal a new direction for Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, where technology is increasingly being deployed to improve operational efficiency, payment systems and customer experience.
