BUA Group has approved an investment of more than $65 million to reconstruct and modernise Terminal B at the Rivers Port Complex in Port Harcourt, a move aimed at boosting cargo handling capacity and supporting Nigeria’s drive to improve port infrastructure.
The project will be executed by BUA Ports and Terminals Nigeria Limited, the concessionaire managing Terminal B, and is expected to enhance operational efficiency, increase cargo throughput and improve service delivery for port users.
The investment was announced during a meeting between Abdul Samad Rabiu, BUA Group Chairman, and the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), led by Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Discussions at the meeting focused on ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s port sector, infrastructure renewal and opportunities for deeper collaboration between government agencies and private investors.
Rabiu commended the NPA’s leadership for its efforts to improve operational efficiency and maintain regular engagement with stakeholders across the maritime industry.
According to him, reforms introduced by the Authority have strengthened investor confidence and encouraged long-term private sector investments in critical infrastructure.
He noted that stable policies, regulatory certainty and sustained collaboration are essential to attracting the capital needed to modernise Nigeria’s ports and logistics sector.
Responding, Dantsoho reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to reforms aimed at making Nigerian ports more efficient, competitive and attractive to investors.
He said the Authority remains focused on reducing vessel turnaround time, improving cargo evacuation and enhancing operational efficiency across the country’s ports.
According to him, collaboration with terminal operators will continue to play a key role in achieving those objectives.
Dantsoho described BUA’s investment as a strong vote of confidence in the Federal Government’s ongoing reforms in the maritime sector. “The NPA will continue to provide an enabling environment that encourages further investments capable of improving service delivery across the country’s ports,” he said.
The NPA chief said the Terminal B reconstruction aligns with the Federal Government’s strategy of modernising critical infrastructure through public-private partnerships.
He added that investments of this nature would improve trade facilitation, support industrialisation and unlock new opportunities in Nigeria’s marine and blue economy.
Industry analysts have consistently identified inadequate port infrastructure as a major contributor to congestion, high logistics costs and delays in cargo movement.
With manufacturers and exporters demanding faster turnaround times and more efficient port operations, the upgrade of Terminal B is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of the Rivers Port Complex and improve Nigeria’s position as a regional maritime hub.
