Motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have been advised to expect traffic delays as the Federal Government begins a two-week repair of the expansion joint at Kara Bridge from Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation announced the traffic advisory in a statement on Monday, saying the rehabilitation work will be carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works.
To facilitate the repairs, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes along a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the expressway, leading to partial traffic disruptions around the Kara corridor.
The ministry urged road users to plan their journeys, consider alternative routes where possible, and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed to the area. “The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation wishes to notify the motoring public that the Federal Ministry of Works will commence the replacement of the expansion joint at Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. “The project is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, for a period of two weeks. Consequently, motorists are advised to expect partial traffic disruptions around the Kara axis during the repair period,” the statement said.
According to the ministry, reducing the carriageway to two lanes is necessary to provide a safe working environment for engineers carrying out the repairs.
Traffic authorities said motorists should expect moderate congestion around Fatgbems Turn, where some drivers are likely to make U-turns or divert to alternative routes to avoid delays.
However, traffic heading towards Ibadan beyond Fatgbems Turn is expected to flow with minimal disruption.
The ministry appealed to motorists to obey traffic regulations and follow directions from traffic management personnel throughout the repair period.
The rehabilitation is part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Ministry of Works to improve the safety and durability of the Kara Bridge, one of the busiest sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The bridge serves as a major gateway connecting Lagos with Ogun State and other parts of southwest and northern Nigeria.
The latest maintenance follows a series of interventions to address deteriorating expansion joints on key bridges along the corridor.
In March 2026, the Federal Government carried out maintenance on the outbound Lagos section of Kara Bridge, prompting a similar traffic advisory.
Earlier, in May 2025, emergency repairs were undertaken on the Kara, Arepo and Magboro bridges after inspections identified failing expansion joints that posed safety risks to motorists.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, had said the interventions were necessary to restore the structural integrity of the bridges, improve road safety and prevent more serious damage.
